AFRICA: Prosperity through Job Creation

The Tenth Annual Rotary International District 5300 Peace Conference will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2005, in the Travis Auditorium of Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena California, who are collaborating with Rotary in this event as they did last time.

Whereas the last conference dealt with entrepreneurship education of all age levels and gender, and its possibilities for stimulating    new business formation and job creation, this conference will apply that information to Africa: How to stimulate prosperity through job creation, There are 759 Rotary Clubs in Africa, with 18,945 members who are generally successful business and professional men and women who can become mentors of the next generation of Africans.  There can be no peace where poverty and unemployment are high, so job creation is a paramount need.

Rotary Clubs in District 5300 have been supporting the teaching of business and entrepreneurship in a partnership with the World Bank Institute in Uganda and Zimbabwe in secondary schools in those countries. New programs in South Africa and Nigeria are being developed.

In recognition of Rotary International's Centennial year, Past R.I. Director James A. Speer will present an overview of 100 years of 'Service Above Self' throughout the world. Keynote speaker is Dr.M. Reuben JaJa, president of the Africa-USA Chamber of Commerce.  Other speakers will be from USC, UCLA, Fuller Seminary, and case studies by Rotarians who have been actively involved in programs in Africa. Dr. K.K.Mugambi, of Culver City Rotary, will describe a successful entrepreneurial program among the Meru tribe in N.E. Kenya.  Kimberly Tegarden of World Vision will tell about providing Microenterprise Loan Funds to women in Africa.  The World Bank?s    program for abating HIV/AIDS through livelihood enhancement of women will be discussed again.

A special emphasis will be directed toward African students in the U.S. who can be  motivated to learn the basics of entrepreneurship and then take this knowledge back to their homelands and start programs there.  A task force comprised of Nigerians permanently resident in California but formerly from Nigeria (146 Rotary Clubs and 2915 members) are currently involved in this and will give a progress report at the conference.  African-Americans who are active or interested in business development in Africa are encouraged to attend.

The conference is open to the public and free. Online Registration is at www.fuller.edu/cll/ce/rotary.asp., or by phone to 1-800-448-3456 (C. Ray Carlson).
