Grants

DSG - District Simplified Grants
What are they? and How do I apply?

District 5300 has requested $25,000 from the RI Foundation for the 2005-2006 DSG (District Simplified Grant). This money comes from our DDF (District Designated Funds) - monies are a part of those that were donated to the Annual Fund-SHARE by YOU three years ago and now come to us for our use for Ambassadorial Scholarships, GSE Teams etc. - and NOW DSG!

DSGs are for local or international projects that involve Rotarians "hands-on" in the project - not just sending money. Priority is given to local projects.  A committee formed from those clubs that gave the most to the Foundation three years ago will select how this money will be allocated. The deadline for receipt of the completed DSG Application form is July 31 2005 – there will be NO extension of this deadline. The form and the instructions can be located above or on the district web site under "forms".

If you have questions please call Margaret Cooker, District Foundation Chair at 760.-243-5928 or e-mail to pdgcooker@verizon.net

Example: You want to help disadvantaged youth in an after-school program and also want to ensure that district 5300 has money from the RI Foundation in 3 years time.  You write the DS grant requesting $7,500 and promise to send $7,500 to the RI Foundation Annual Fund - new money - not what you were planning to send anyway!

If your grant is selected then you will receive a cheque from the district for $7,500 and you will send a cheque for (or cheques totaling) $7,500 to the RI Foundation Annual Fund -SHARE. [Now if 7 Rotarians each gave the club a cheque for $1,000 to be sent to RI Annual Fund-Share – then they would all become Paul Harris Society Members AND Paul Harris Fellows AND probably Multiple Paul Harris Fellows for 2005-2006]

IF HOWEVER you plan to use club funds then you will request a 50% match from the district then you will need to put up $5,000, the district will match with $2,500 and NO money goes to the Rotary Foundation, there is NO Foundation recognition and no money comes back to us in three years time.

Rotary Foundation Donor Advised Fund

The Rotary Foundation offers Rotarians and Rotary-affiliated groups a new financial strategy that will allow them to meet their ongoing charitable objectives and continue to support the Foundation’s essential programs. The Rotary Foundation Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is an innovative giving vehicle that offers you the flexibility of making grant recommendations now, next year, or whenever you are ready to help your preferred charities. Through a DAF, you can create a separate investment or savings account earmarked exclusively for your charitable giving.

Update on Individual Grants (Rotarian & Non-Rotarian Travel)
November 17 2005

At their October 2005 meeting, The Rotary Foundation Trustees agreed that Individual Grants are an important component of the Humanitarian Grants program as they support the direct service and planning missions of volunteers serving communities in need.  As a result, they agreed to lift the moratorium on Individual Grants effective 1 July 2006 for volunteer travel taking place after 1 October 2006.  The Trustees will evaluate the grant program at their April 2006 meeting and will consider modifications to improve stewardship of Individual Grants and allocate resources required to process them efficiently.

At this time, TRF will not process any additional requests for Individual Grants during the 2005-06 Rotary year.

If you choose to apply, please check the Rotary website after 15 May 2006 for updates about a new application process for Individual Grants in 2006-07.

3-H Proposal Deadline Extension

As of 31 March 2005, The Rotary Foundation has received a limited number of eligible 3-H proposals for consideration at their April 2006 meeting. In an effort to ensure greater participation by clubs and districts that would like their project to be considered for 3-H funding, The Rotary Foundation will continue to accept 3-H proposals through 30 June 2005. The 3-H proposal form is available for download from the Rotary website.

Clubs and districts eligible to submit 3-H proposals must be in good-standing with Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation and have successfully completed and reported on a Matching Grant project as primary partners within 5 years of submitting their 3-H application. Please forward this information to the clubs in your district.
